Hamish John Appleby

Hamish John Appleby is a Melbourne-based photographer with more than 25 years’ experience across Australia and internationally. His work spans conferences and corporate events, editorial commissions and documentary assignments, alongside photography of workplaces, healthcare, architecture and interiors.

He is interested in the details that give a photograph its character: a gesture, an interaction, the relationship between people and their surroundings. On assignment, he combines that attentiveness with careful preparation, technical experience and a practical understanding of what clients need from their images.

His approach is calm and collaborative. He works unobtrusively when events are unfolding, offers clear direction when a photograph needs arranging, and helps people feel comfortable in front of the camera.

Hamish has undertaken numerous assignments for GIZ and the International Water Management Institute, documenting water management, agriculture and community livelihoods. His editorial commissions include work for The Australian Financial Review, and his photographs have appeared in publications by the World Bank and CGIAR, as well as annual reports, campaigns and organisational communications.

He holds a Master of Media Arts and has lived, travelled or worked in more than 50 countries. His practice brings together a grounding in the visual arts, extensive commercial experience and a continuing interest in documentary photography.

Based in Melbourne, Hamish is available for assignments throughout Australia and internationally.

Hamish made the process really easy, even for someone who’s not naturally photogenic, and the quality of the shots was very impressive. —Sheila Scopis — Google review
